If Something Feels Too Simple, You Probably Haven’t Seen the Details


For a long time I thought I understood how certain systems worked.

Take fitness trackers as an example. In my head, the architecture felt straightforward: connect to an API like Strava, pull activity data, store it somewhere, and display some statistics. Simple enough.

At one point I even built a small integration using a workflow tool. The data fields were already there. Distance, elevation, time, heart rate — everything looked neat and ready to use.

It worked. The system ran. The dashboard showed numbers.
And because of that, I believed I understood how fitness tracking systems worked.
But recently I realized something uncomfortable: I didn’t actually understand much at all.

I only understood the surface.

The Layers of “Knowing”

Looking back, I think there are several layers to understanding a system.

Layer 1 — Conceptual knowledge

You know the big picture.

A fitness tracker records activities. A pharmacy system records transactions. A booking system manages reservations.

At this stage everything feels simple because the complexity is hidden.

Layer 2 — Using existing tools

You start using APIs, SDKs, templates, or automation tools.
For example:

  • pulling activity data from Strava
  • using an automation workflow
  • relying on libraries that already parse data

Things still feel simple because most of the hard parts are abstracted away.

Layer 3 — Understanding the structure

This is where the illusion starts breaking.
You begin asking questions like:

  • How exactly is a GPX file structured?
  • What are track points?
  • How is elevation stored?
  • How do timestamps work?

Suddenly the data isn’t just “activity data” anymore. It’s a sequence of geographic points, timestamps, elevations, and metadata.
You realize there’s a lot happening underneath the surface.

Layer 4 — Real-world behavior and edge cases

This is where systems stop looking clean. For activity data, you start encountering things like:

  • GPS noise
  • missing timestamps
  • inconsistent sampling intervals
  • elevation spikes

For business systems like a pharmacy system:

  • stock adjustments
  • expired batches
  • supplier corrections
  • returns and partial invoices

At this point you’re no longer working with an idealized model. You’re dealing with the messy reality of real systems.
And that’s when real understanding begins.

The Trap of Surface Knowledge

The trap is subtle.
If you’ve used good tools, everything looks easy. You start thinking:

I know how this works.

But what you actually know is how to use the interface of a system, not how the system itself works.

Tools are great at hiding complexity. That’s their job. But they can also create an illusion of mastery.
I fell into this trap more than once.
In the fitness example, I thought the system was simple because the API already returned nicely structured fields.

But I had never asked deeper questions like:

  • How do devices actually record activity data?
  • What formats do they export? (GPX? TCX? FIT?)
  • How do you parse those files?
  • How do you compute elevation gain from raw points?

Those questions live below the abstraction layer most tools provide.

The Same Pattern Appears Everywhere

Once I noticed this pattern, I started seeing it in other domains too.

Take pharmacy systems.

At a high level it seems straightforward: record purchases, record sales, track stock. But once you start modeling real transactions, the details appear quickly:

  • batch numbers
  • expiration dates
  • partial deliveries
  • returns (sometimes partial)
  • stock corrections
  • audit logs

The “simple system” suddenly becomes a web of small but important rules.
And those rules are where real software engineering lives.

Learning by Going One Layer Deeper

The realization led me to change how I approach learning.
Instead of only understanding systems at a conceptual level, I try to go one layer deeper.
For example, instead of saying:

A fitness tracker imports activity data.

I might ask:

  • How do I parse a GPX file?
  • How are track points structured?
  • How do I compute distance from coordinates?
  • How do I calculate elevation gain?

These questions lead to small technical experiments.
None of these experiments are large products. They are just small explorations into how systems actually work.
But each one replaces a piece of surface knowledge with something more concrete.

A Useful Signal

I’ve started noticing a small signal that often tells me I don’t understand something yet.
If something feels too simple, it’s often because I haven’t seen the details.
Real systems rarely stay simple once you open them up.

From “Knowing” to Understanding

For a long time I was comfortable knowing how to use systems.
Now I’m more interested in understanding how they work.
Not at the level of massive architectures, but at the level of small mechanisms:

  • how data is structured
  • how it is parsed
  • how it flows through a system
  • how edge cases appear

That’s where the real learning happens.

And sometimes, the best way to discover what you don’t know is simply to open the hood and start looking.
